Tooth loss, particularly multiple and total tooth loss without replacement can have a direct impact on well-being. Did you know that higher mortality rates have been associated with individuals missing all of their teeth? Without teeth, a person has less ability to eat nutritious foods necessary for healthy living. Dentures provide an option for tooth replacement that can improve the quality of life and function for a patient who is missing a whole arch or even a few teeth. However, there can be a limitation to the comfort and retention of some dentures. If you are currently wearing dentures and suffering from slipping or an uncomfortable fit, implant supported dentures may be the solution.
Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures
If you’re struggling with the dentures that you currently have, you may want to consider dental implants. Here are some benefits to consider:
- You’ll have improved fit and retention of the denture, increasing your confidence and ability to eat your favorite foods.
- No more worries about your denture slipping when you laugh, talk or eat
- Dental implants can help to preserve bone. After a tooth is pulled, the bone around the site is slowly absorbed by the body and bone levels dissipate over time. Long time denture wearers sometimes experience facial shape changes as bone levels decline. By placing dental implants, we can help to prevent this bone loss
- Dental implants can last for years and require simple maintenance and home care.
- Lower dentures can be particularly hard to keep in place due to the small arch and the force of lips and tongue. With dental implant support, you will notice a more sturdy fit.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants for denture support are medical grade zirconia (non metal) or medical grade titanium which is designed to allow bone to grow around and hold the implant in place. This process is called osseointegration. A small support piece called an abutment is attached to the implant and this is what your implant denture snaps into. An implant supported denture is often called an overdenture because it fits over the gums and over the abutment.
The Process of Switching to an Implant Supported Denture
Creating an implant supported overdenture is a multi-step process that typically spans a couple of months, but the long-lasting benefits make it worthwhile!
You will start your journey with a comprehensive evaluation with our dentists. We’ll assess your oral health, the quality of your bone, and discuss your goals. In some cases, a bone graft may be necessary to ensure a strong foundation for the implants; this can be conveniently done in-office.
If you are a current denture-wearer, we will assess your denture to determine if a new denture is required or if a retro-fit is possible.
Once you’re ready, you’ll undergo a simple surgical procedure to place the implants into your jawbone. This visit usually only requires regular anesthetic and is typically done within an hour or two! You are able to return to work and most patients are pleasantly surprised with how easy implant placement can be. Sedation is available if you feel any anxiety and we can discuss all of your concerns at your consultation visit. After a healing period of 3 months, we’ll be ready to process a denture to snap into the implants.
Although the process does require multiple visits, each one is crucial to ensure the long-term success of your new smile.
